Cebu teen slices girlfriend's throat


CEBU, Philippines - "She's our bread winner. She helps me in sending her siblings to school. I'm afraid she's going to lose her voice."
This was Maricel Abad’s statement to media when asked about the condition of her 21-year-old daughter, Mariel Mae Abad, whose  throat was allegedly slashed by her 17-year-old boyfriend last Friday.
Mariel is now at the intensive care unit of the South General Hospital in Cebu.
"Doctors are still observing her development but they already warned me that Mariel might not be able to talk again because of the damage in her vocal cords," her mother said.
"She's already out of danger and will be brought to a room for further treatment. She can communicate through writing," said her uncle, Dexter Abad, who was asked by her parents to take Mariel's writings about the incident to the National Bureau of Investigation as evidence against the suspect.
Maricel said that her daughter and the suspect have been together for a year. She been opposing her daughter;s relationship because the suspect allegedly hurts her daughter when he gets jealous.
“I always tell my daughter to stay away from him because I don’t want her to get hurt. There was this one time that he was angry because Mariel went out with friends. He followed her and slapped her in front of everyone when they had a fight,” she said. 
Police Officer 1 Edsel Ricablanca of Minglanilla Police Station said Mariel wanted to break up with her boyfriend, but the suspect, identified as "Mark," allegedly attempted suicide.
The throat-slashing incident occurred in the suspect's house.
The victim was able to escape. Mark, who was accompanied by his parents and a lawyer, surrendered to the NBI Saturday.
Maricel said that she cannot forgive the suspect for what he has done to her daughter.
She said they will file a criminal case against him and wants his family to shoulder her daughter's hospital bills.
NBI assistant regional director Atty. Lauro Reyes said that the suspect admitted the crime, and his parents convinced him to surrender.
Reyes assured that the suspect will not be harmed under the NBI's custody.
He said Mark will face frustrated homicide charge for the attack on Mariel.
In an interview, the suspect said he is leaving everything to his lawyer but added that he still loves Mariel and he is sorry for what he did.

Jealous husband kills wife with hammer

MANILA, Philippines – A 43-year-old man is now behind bars after striking his wife dead with a hammer inside their home in New Corella, Davao del Norte.
The suspect, Arturo Maco, admitted he attacked his wife Judelyn after she threatened to leave him last Sunday.
Maco struck his wife with a hammer on her head and nape.
Maco’s children said their father had been jealous of another man, prompting him to confront their mother.
Judelyn’s parents, meanwhile, said Maco often hit his wife in their 10 years of marriage.
They said Maco had always been jealous of Judelyn’s co-workers.
Maco is facing charges of parricide.

Pinoy gets perfect score in HK math tilt





MANILA, Philippines – A Filipino student won the country’s lone gold medal at the recently concluded 15th Po Leung Kuk Primary Mathematics World Contest in Hong Kong.
Miguel Lorenzo Ildesa of PAREF Westbridge School received a perfect score in the individual competition, earning him the gold medal.
The Philippine contingent also won four silver and five bronze medals, and two group merit awards.
“The Philippine Team won ten individual medals and two group merit awards in the contest. We are very proud of their performance,” said Dr. Simon Chua, president of the Mathematics Trainers Guild-Philippines (MTG), which trains students for competitions.
Filipino students who won silver medals include Sedrick Scott Keh of Xavier School, Rafael Villaluz of San Beda College Alabang, Shaquille Wyan Que of Grace Christian College, and Terence Brian Tsai of Chiang Kai Shek College.
Bronze medalists, meanwhile, include Mark Christopher Uy of Xavier School, Jinger Chong of Saint Jude Catholic School, Luke Matthew Bernardo of Philadelphia School, Xavier Jefferson Ray Go of Zamboanga Chong Hua Academy and Genesis Jacinth Tan of Quezon City Science High School.
The 15th Po Leung Kuk Primary Mathematics World Contest was held in Hong Kong from July 14 to 20.
Aside from the Philippines, other countries that participated in the competition include United States, Australia, Bulgaria, Russia, South Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, India, Macau, Singapore, South Africa, Indonesia and Mongolia.
