MANILA, Philippines – It is safe to say that “Gangnam Style,” the music video of South Korean rapper Psy, is one of the most viral videos in the history of YouTube.
The video, which has over 130 million views to date, gained popularity for its catchy beats and hilarious dance moves. Psy’s horse dance, in particular, has started a craze all of its own.
The “Gangnam Style” fever has hit several parts of the world, with everyone from Nelly Furtado to a flash mob in Bangkok, Thailand.
Of course, Filipinos were not spared.

One of the first local celebrities to do Psy’s horse dance is comedian Vice Ganda who, coincidentally, has long been compared to the large, four-legged mammal.
In an episode of “It’s Showtime,” where he is one of the hosts, Vice Ganda performed a “Gangnam Style” number before the studio audience.
Several others eventually followed suit, from kids on a vacation to office workers bidding farewell to a former colleague.
A man wearing an all-black ensemble named Ian Cruz, accompanied by a little boy, also did the dance in an amateur video shot in a garage and, eventually, in a cemetery.
Groups of boys and girls in the Philippines also danced to the YouTube hit, using the same video-sharing website to show off their “Gangnam Style” moves to the world.
Among them are a group of girls named April, Jhulianne, Victoria, Danica and Karen, who took a video of themselves doing Psy’s horse dance at home.
A video of five boys, who called their moves the “Taliswag Style,” also made the rounds on social networking sites as a result of the “Gangnam Style” dance craze.
Just recently, sexy girl group Mocha Girls made their own version of the “Gangnam Style” video, with some scenes shot at a kalesa (horse-drawn carriage) and in front of an airplane, among others. It is currently the most viral Philippine-made “Gangnam Style” video to date with over 700,000 views.
Not the first time
This is not the first time that Filipinos made their own versions of a YouTube hit.
Early this year, local celebrities, athletes and ordinary folk lip-synched Carly Rae Jepsen’s hit song “Call Me Maybe,” joining the ranks of foreign stars Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez and Ashley Tisdale.
The most popular video of them all is the one featuring Anne Curtis, Georgina Wilson, Solenn Heussaff and their pals trading their usual picture-perfect refinement for an uninhibited, “wacky” performance in an amateur music video.
Whether it be “Gangnam Style” or “Call Me Maybe,” it only goes to show that Filipinos like to add a local flavor to any global trend.
After seeing the different versions of the two videos on YouTube, several netizens were quick to say that “It’s more fun in the Philippines,” as promised by the country’s tourism slogan.
