Honest airport worker returns cash, valuables worth P1.8M

MANILA, Philippines - An airport building attendant assigned at the NAIA terminal 2 domestic departure area had proven again the saying that “honesty is the best policy”, as he returned cash and other valuables totalling P1.8 million.
NAIA terminal 2 manager, lawyer Cecilio Bobila, identified the building attendant as Ronald C. Gadayan who is assigned at the NAIA terminal 2 south wing domestic terminal.

Gadayan has been working as building attendant at NAIA for the last three years, where he has proven his honesty on many occasions by returning items left by passengers at the terminal.
Ang turo po ng aking magulang ay wag kunin ang bagay na hindi sa iyo. Lumaki po akong naghihikahos, pero kailan man hindi ko pinag-interesan ang mga bagay na napupulot ko sa trabaho (My parents taught me never to get what is not mine. I grew up poor but I never took any interest in the things I found while at work),” said Gadayan.
Bobila said that upon learning of the incident, they immediately informed the NAIA Police Intelligence and Investigation Division to make the necessary inventory and contact the owner of the “Burberry” pouch bag.
An inventory of the items revealed that the bag contained P634,807.96 in cash of different denominations, assorted jewelry, branded wristwatches and expensive sunglasses with a total estimated value of P1.8 million.
Upon investigation, police identified the owner through his calling card and credit card as passenger Francis Lloyd Chua Ty of flight PR 849 bound for Cebu at 3:30 p.m., where he left his black “Burberry” pouch bag under a gang chair while waiting to board his Cebu flight.
As related by Gadayan, he immediately informed airline ground staff to page the owner of the bag he found while on duty at the south wing terminal, but no one came forward to reclaim the bag.
He then asked his immediate supervisor to inform the airport management of his discovery, where they immediately contacted Mr. Ty.
Mr. Ty, who was then already in Cebu, instructed his executive assistant, Marve Cherie Lyn Cruz, to represent him in claiming his belongings with the airport authority.
